PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Charles Philpott pitched six innings of one-hit baseball, and
Kevin Macias and
Josh Jefferson knocked in two RBIs apiece Friday to lead the Prairie View A&M Panthers to an 8-1 win over Our Lady of the Lake.
Philpott struck out six batters and didn't allow a hit until the top of the sixth inning as Prairie View A&M (2-5) claimed its second consecutive win. The win also gave the Panthers a series victory over their NAIA opponent from San Antonio.
The Panthers gave Philpott an early lead in the bottom on the first when starting pitcher Chase Smith threw a wild pitch on ball four to
Connor Wrye. The wild pitch allowed
Cody Den Beste to score from third. One inning later, Macias' first of two doubles in the game knocked home
Darrien Williams to give PVAMU at 2-0 lead.
In hindsight, that lead would have been close enough for the Prairie View A&M pitching staff to claim the win, but it was a four-run fourth inning that allowed the Philpott and his relievers to pitch aggressively. Macias began the fourth-inning fusillade with an RBI double that scored
Grant Dougherty.
Jefferson, the next batter, then drilled a single to left field which allowed Williams and Macias to score and give the Panthers a 5-0 lead. Jefferson would later come home on a sacrifice fly from Den Beste.
The Panthers also added runs on what should have been an RBI groundout to first base by Dougherty that allowed
Connor Wrye to score. Dougherty stayed on the base path when OLLU first baseman Jake Simmons muffed the grounder. In the sixth inning, Wrye knocked his second triple of the season to drive home
Joseph Mack.
Michael Dewey pitched two innings of solid relief for the Panthers, allowing one hit and striking out a batter.
Jordan Johnson struck out his first two batters in the top of the ninth and completed the game for Prairie View A&M.
The Panthers' patience at the plate ended up paying off, as the Saints issued nine walks – spread out to only four players. Wrye walked three times, while Williams, Macias and
Walter Wells walked twice.
Prairie View A&M returns to action Tuesday when they visit Sam Houston State for a nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
