The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers make their final scheduled out-of-state road trip of the season this weekend when they visit the state of Alabama. The Lady Panthers face Alabama A&M on Saturday before heading to Montgomery to visit Alabama State.
The Lady Panthers (12-14, 9-5 SWAC) aim for their fourth consecutive victory when they visit Alabama A&M on Saturday. Prairie View A&M is coming off a weekend sweep at home over Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Lady Panthers also seek their third consecutive season sweep of Alabama A&M.
Prairie View A&M is led by the perimeter play of
Jeanette Jackson and
Alexus Parker. Jackson, a senior guard from Las Vegas, Nev., leads the SWAC in both scoring (17.4 points per game) and assists (3.7 apg). Parker, a sophomore from Savannah, Ga., has posted four double-doubles in her last eight games, and averages 9.8 points per contest.
The Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M (6-19, 5-9) SWAC enter Saturday's contest looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Alabama A&M guard Brittney Strickland ranks third in the SWAC with a scoring average of 15.3 points per game.
The women's and men's games between the two teams will be broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM. Leonard Moon will have the call.
Last time out …- The Lady Panthers picked up their third consecutive win with an 84-63 defeat of Arkansas–Pine Bluff, giving Prairie View A&M a season sweep of the Lady Golden Lions.
- Jeanette Jackson scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting. She also handed out five assists.
- Alexus Parker and Shamiya Brooks posted identical double-double totals of 17 points and 10 rebounds apiece. Brooks' reached double figures in rebounds for the 11th consecutive game.
- The Lady Panthers improved to 10-0 in games when they led at halftime, and 11-1 in games when they outshot their opponent from the floor.
Parker named Player of the Week
- Alexus Parker was named the SWAC's Player of the Week on Wednesday after she averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in leading the Lady Panthers to wins over Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas–Pine Bluff.
- The award was the fourth such honor for the Lady Panthers this season. Jeanette Jackson twice claimed the honor before Christmas, while Shamiya Brooks earned her award in mid-January.
- Parker posted double-doubles in each of those games, claiming her third and fourth double-double of her career. All of her double-doubles have occurred in Prairie View A&M's last eight games.
- Parker scored 18 points – including a perfect 10-of-10 showing at the free throw line – and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in Prairie View A&M's 69-50 win over Mississippi Valley State.
Jackson leads the SWAC
- Jeanette Jackson (Sr., 5-7, G) ranks among the SWAC's top 10 in seven statistical categories. She leads the conference in scoring (17.4 points per game), assists (3.7 per game), and minutes played (34.9 minutes per game).
- A senior from Las Vegas, Nev., Jackson ranks fifth in the conference in free throw percentage, making 79.7 percent of her shots.
- She has shot more and made more free throws than anyone else in the conference, sinking 149 out of 187 attempts.
- She ranks 10th in the conference steals, grabbing 1.7 steals per game. Jackson's 1.6 made 3-pointers per contest ranks first in the conference.
- Jackson's assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.0 ranks third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Starters and reserves
- Lady Panthers starters have scored 1,164 points this season, 70 percent of the team's total. Prairie View A&M's opponents get 60 percent of their points from their starting five.
- Alexus Parker has averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in the 22 games that she has started. Those averages are three and one-half points (and one full rebound) better than she totals coming off the bench.
- Conversely, 6-foot-4-inch Shamiya Brooks is even more imposing coming off the bench, averaging team bests of 10.1 points and 9.6 rebounds in the seven games she has come off the bench. She has tallied double-doubles in five of those seven games.
- Monique Abbs has proven to be the best 3-point shooter when coming off the bench. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz., has shot 35 percent (9 of 26) from 3-point range in the 22 games she has played as a reserve.
Haynes seeing increased playing time
- La'Sha Haynes (Fr., 6-0, F) has seen her role expanded over the course of Prairie View A&M's last four games. The lone freshman on the Lady Panthers squad, Haynes has started in each of the team's last four contests, giving her the first starts of her collegiate career.
- Haynes scored a career-high eight points in Prairie View A&M's 59-51 win at Grambling State on Feb. 16. She played 18 minutes in the contest, also a collegiate high.
- Over her last three games, Haynes has averaged 4.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. She has played an average of 15.3 minutes per game during this recent three-game stretch, double her season average of 7.1 minutes played.
- Haynes pulled in a career-high eight rebounds – four offensive and four defensive – in the Lady Panthers' 84-63 win Monday over Arkansas–Pine Bluff.
On the road
- The Lady Panthers are 5-13 away from Prairie View this season, and 3-4 in conference road games this season.
- Prairie View A&M shoots only 34 percent from the field (358 of 1,059) away from home, while Panther opponents shoot 42 percent (454 of 1,085).Â
- (Coincidentally, the Lady Panthers shoot 42 percent from the field at home while their opponents shoot 34 percent in Prairie View.)
- Chelsey Rosier, the team's top 3-point shooter, has shot better from 3-point range on the road (34 percent, 20 of 59) than she does at home (25 percent, 7 of 28).
- Jeanette Jackson averages 17.6 points per game away from Prairie View A&M. She has shot 32 percent (91 of 285) from the field during such games, and has made 79 percent (107 of 135) of her free throw attempts.
- Against unranked teams on the road, the Lady Panthers' shooting percentage jumps to 36 percent, while the scoring deficit per game also drops from 11.9 to 5.3 when only Prairie View A&M's unranked opponents are considered.
Parker heating upÂ
- Alexus Parker (Soph., 5-10, G) has commanded more and more attention from opponents as conference play has continued. Over her last eight games, Parker has averaged 15.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest.
- The sophomore from Savannah, Ga., has seen her scoring average increase at the conclusion of seven of those eight games.
- In conference play, Parker has averaged 13.1 points and 7.1 points per contest. Her .404 field goal percentage in conference games leads Prairie View A&M's perimeter players.
- Parker has also climbed onto the conference's statistical leaderboard. Her 9.8 points per game ranks 17th in the conference. She also ranks 12th in rebounds, offensive rebounds, and defensive rebounds per game.
Brooks dominates the inside game
- Shamiya Brooks posted her ninth double-double over her previous 11 games in Monday's win over Arkansas–Pine Bluff.
- Brooks ranks second in the SWAC in rebounding, grabbing an average of 9.0 caroms a game through 24 contests to go along with a scoring average of 8.6 points per game. Only Alabama State's Jasmine Peeples averages more rebounds among SWAC players, pulling in 9.9 per game.
- She is also second in the conference in blocked shots, swatting away an average of 2.2 per game. Peeples leads the conference in that category with 3.0 blocks per contest.
- Brooks averages a league-best 4.3 rebounds on the offensive end of the court. Those offensive rebounds have led to some easy baskets for Brooks, who ranks fourth in the SWAC with a .497 field-goal percentage (84 of 169).
- Brooks is averaging a double-double in SWAC play with 10.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per conference game. She has shot 53.5 percent (54 of 101) from the floor in Prairie View A&M's 14 conference games.
Overshown returns to team
- Taylor Overshown (Jr., 5-8, G) made her return to the Lady Panthers two weeks ago when the team visited Jackson State and Grambling State.
- Overshown played for the Lady Panthers in both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
- As a sophomore, Overshown shot 41 percent (14 of 34) from the floor in limited minutes in 2013-14.
- Overshown is seeing more playing time than ever before as she averages 12.0 minutes per contest. She has scored in her last three games, and has averaged 1.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
Hey (Lady) Bulldog
- The Lady Bulldogs enter Saturday's contest with a record of 6-19, and 5-9 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alabama A&M has lost its last three contests, all on the road.
- Prior to their three-game losing streak, the Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a weekend sweep at home of Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas–Pine Bluff.
- The last time Alabama A&M won a home game against a team with a winning SWAC record was Jan. 17, when they defeated in-state rival Alabama State.
- Alabama A&M leads the SWAC in free throw shooting. Lady Bulldog players make 69 percent (374 of 541) of their free throw attempts. PVAMU is second in free throw shooting, making 68.7 percent (395 of 575) of its free throws.
- The Lady Bulldogs give up 69.5 points per game, more than any other team in the SWAC. Alabama A&M also ranks last in field goal percentage defense, as opponents have 44 percent (679 of 1,528) of their shots.
- To counter that, the Lady Bulldogs rank third in the SWAC in field goal percentage. Alabama A&M's 37.1 percent shooting (506 of 1,363) edges out fourth-ranked Prairie View A&M in that category (36.5 percent, 583 of 1,598).
- Alabama A&M ranks ninth out of 10 teams in both rebounds and offensive rebounds per game. The Lady Bulldogs secure 35.2 caroms and 11.0 offensive rebounds per contest.
- Brittney Strickland (Sr., 5-5, G) leads the Lady Bulldogs and ranks third in the SWAC with a scoring average of 15.3 points per game. Strickland's 2.6 assists per game ranks fifth in the conference.
- Janie Myles averages 13.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the Lady Bulldogs. The 5-foot-11 junior from West Allis, Wis., joined the team in mid-December.
Prairie View A&M vs. Alabama A&M
- Alabama A&M is the newest member program of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, joining the league in 1998.
- The Lady Panthers are 19-14 all-time (in their NCAA era) against the Lady Bulldogs. Alabama A&M is one of two SWAC programs that the Lady Panthers have a winning record against since the start of the 1981-82 season.
- Prairie View A&M has won its last five meetings against Alabama A&M. A win in Normal, Ala., would give the Lady Panthers their consecutive season sweep of the Lady Bulldogs.
- Alabama A&M is the only SWAC member institution that the Lady Panthers have never played in the postseason conference tournament.
