HOUSTON -- The top baseball team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Western Division ran its winning streak to seven games while handing Prairie View A&M its sixth and seventh consecutive losses Saturday as Texas Southern swept a doubleheader from the Panthers.
Texas Southern (15-11, 9-2 SWAC) won Saturday's opener by a score of 14-7 before winning the second game 16-4.
In game one, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning of play and held off a late rally attempt by the Panthers (7-17, 4-5 SWAC). Felix Gomez pitched six and one-thirds innings to pick up the win for the Tigers. Starting pitcher
Alberto Aveytia took the loss after giving up six earned runs over five innings.
Carson Lee and
Connor Wrye each went 2-for-4 in the game for the Panthers, and both players knocked two RBIs in the game.
Cody Den Beste hit his third home run of the season in game one for Prairie View A&M.
The Tigers pounded out 16 hits in game one. Both teams committed five errors apiece in the game.
In the second game, the Panthers and Tigers were tied after each of the first three innings, but the home team scored 15 consecutive runs between the third and sixth innings and claim a seven-inning win.
Frank Cruz pitched five innings for the Tigers to pick up the win.
Jordan Stewart absorbed the loss for the Panthers, giving up 10 earned runs over five innings.
After pitching in relief in game one, PVAMU's
Joseph Mack turned in an errorless performance in his return to the outfield, and also knocked a two-RBI double in the top of the third inning. Freshman
Darrien Williams hit his first collegiate home run in the top of the seventh inning for the Panthers' final run.
The two teams conclude their series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
