(Pictured: Charles Philpott started on the mound Sunday and pitched four innings for the Panthers.)HOUSTON -- The Texas Southern Tigers completed a three-game sweep of Prairie View A&M with a seven-inning, 12-2 win Sunday over the visiting Panthers.
Robert Pearson struck out 10 batters and scattered four hits over six innings of work to pick up the win for the frontrunners in the SWAC's West Division.Â
Charles Philpott absorbed the loss, giving up seven earned runs over four innings of play.
The Tigers (16-11) improved to 10-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division standings, three and one-half games ahead of second-place Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Panthers (7-18) fell to 4-7 in the West Division standings.
The Panthers struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning.
Cody Den Beste, who batted third for the first time this season, knocked a sacrifice fly that scored
Walter Wells. Two batters later,
Joseph Mack's RBI groundout allowed
Grant Dougherty to score.
The Tigers, however, wasted no time getting back in the game, as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Texas Southern would score in five of the seven innings that were played, and Javier Valdez ended the game early with a two-run home run.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Austin to face Huston-Tillotson in a double-header. First pitch from Downs Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
