Panthers split doubleheader at Huston-Tillotson

AUSTIN – The Prairie View A&M Panthers snapped an eight-game losing streak Tuesday with a narrow 3-2 victory over Huston-Tillotson in the first game of a doubleheader.

Huston-Tillotson, which competes in the NAIA and the Red River Athletic Conference, won the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 5-3.

At historic Downs Field in east Austin, Joseph Mack went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including the game-winning tally in the top of the seventh, to lead the Panthers (8-19) to the game one victory. It was the first multi-hit game of Mack's Prairie View A&M career.

In a game scheduled for seven innings, Carson Lee led off the top of the seventh with a single, and then moved to second base on Cody Den Beste's sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Mack knocked a single through the left side that allowed Lee to cross home plate with what would be the game-winning run.

Grant Dougherty picked up his first win of the season for the Panthers after pitching the final two and two-thirds innings without giving up a hit. Dougherty struck out four batters and retired the final seven batters he faced.

Edward Robledo pitched solidly for the Panthers, throwing four and one-thirds innings. He allowed only one earned run and struck out two batters.

Prairie View A&M got on the board in the top of the first inning when Mack singled home Lee from third base. The Panthers enjoyed an extending inning when Connor Wrye reached on an infield error prior to Mack's at-bat.

Walter Wells extended Prairie View A&M's lead in the top of the second with an RBI single that scored Darrien Williams. Williams led off the inning by reaching base on a passed ball after swinging at strike three.

After scoring in the home half of the third inning, the Rams tied the game in bottom of the fourth. HT put two runners in scoring position with one out before Michael Blair knocked an infield single to score Charleston Samuel from third base. But before the Rams could do further damage, Robledo induced Shane McGuiness into a 4-6-3 double play – Kevin Macias to Wells to Lee.

In game two, the Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit and claim a lead they would not relinquish.

Phillip Gay made his first start of the year on the mound and pitched four and one-thirds innings. He gave the home team trouble through three innings before running into trouble in the fourth.

Carson Lee and Cody Den Beste knocked RBIs in the game. Jordan Jeanlouis also knocked an RBI single in the top of the second inning for his first base hit of the year. Jeanlouis' Texas League scored Mack from third, but a second run was denied when Josh Jefferson was thrown out at the plate.

The Panthers return to action Friday when they open a three-game series with Southern. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start.
