Pine Bluff sweeps Sunday doubleheader from Prairie View A&M

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Prairie View A&M Panthers concluded their four-game trip to Arkansas on Sunday with a pair of losses to Arkansas–Pine Bluff.

The Golden Lions defeated the Panthers by scores of 2-1 and 10-4 on Sunday.

Arkansas–Pine Bluff also swept a Saturday doubleheader from the Panthers, winning by scores of 7-6 and 4-3.

Sunday's second game was a makeup contest from early March when rainfall in the greater Houston area postponed the third game of the series between the two teams at Prairie View A&M's Tankersley Field. Since it was a makeup of one of Prairie View A&M's home games, the Panthers batted as the home team in the 10-4 contest Sunday.

The Panthers (8-26) dropped their eighth consecutive game and saw their divisional record fall to 4-14.

The Golden Lions (19-12) improved their record in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division standings to 13-3. However, Golden Lion teams are not eligible to attend the SWAC postseason this academic year, and as a result, the remaining four teams in the division – Prairie View A&M included – automatically advance to the SWAC tournament in May.

In Sunday's opener, Jordan Stewart returned to form on the mound and gave the Panther bullpen a rest as he threw eight solid innings, giving up only one earned run and striking out nine. The Golden Lions scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Andre Davis doubled home Jeremiah Figueroa.

A single from Jordan Jeanlouis tied the game for the Panthers in the top of the fifth. Jeanlouis' hit scored Kevin Macias, who tripled moments before.

In game two, the Golden Lions scored four unanswered runs in the middle innings to seize control of a game that had been tied at 3-3 over the first three frames.

The Panthers briefly held a 2-1 lead after one inning when Angel Avalos and Cody Den Beste knocked RBIs. Avalos, making only his second start in two months recorded his first run batted in since February.

Charles Philpott took the loss in game two for the Panthers. Grand Dougherty pitched the final three innings, giving up his first earned runs of the season when the Lions plated three in the top of the ninth. Dougherty had pitched 15 innings without giving up an earned run this season prior to the Lions' outburst. He also got two hits in the game.

The Panthers return home this week for a single game Wednesday against NCAA Division II opponent Oklahoma Panhandle State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
