Panthers rally falls short as Grambling wins 8-7

GRAMBLING, La. – The Prairie View A&M Panthers rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning and had the tying run on second base with no outs, but couldn't even the score Monday as Grambling State claimed a series sweep with an 8-7 win.

The Tigers (8-26) scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and they would need every one of those scores as they improved to 6-11 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division standings.

The Panthers (10-29) fell to 4-17 in SWAC West Division play.

After falling behind 8-2 after five innings, the Panthers rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth, two of them coming on Jordan Jeanlouis' first home run of the season. He went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the Monday's game.

Jeanlouis (pictured) also knocked in the first run of the ninth inning with an RBI single after Carson Lee doubled and Connor Wrye followed with a single. Kevin Macias then cut the Grambling lead to one when he singled home Wrye.

The Panthers, who are in the midst of playing six games in four days, got all eight innings on the mound from Jordan Stewart. He struck out 11 but also walked seven. All eight Grambling State runs were earned.

Starting pitcher Ike O'Bear went five innings and picked up the win for Grambling State.

The Tigers' Edwin Drexler provided the highlight of the bottom of the fifth with a bases-loaded double that scored three runs, including the game-winning tally.

Angel Avalos went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Panthers. Kevin Macias and Walter Wells also knocked two hits apiece, with each player collecting on RBI in the game.

The Panthers have only a short time to rest as they host Texas–Pan American on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. PVAMU will also host Huston-Tillotson in a doubleheader on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
