PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Alex Fields' first collegiate goal proved to be the difference Friday as the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers edged St. Thomas–Houston 1-0.
 
Fields, a freshman from Tomball, Texas (Tomball Memorial), headed a corner kick from the foot of Kara Ballard in the 58th minute past St. Thomas goalkeeper Emma Pinkerton to break the deadlock.
 
The Lady Panthers improved to 2-2-1 with the win. St. Thomas, an NAIA member program that competes in the Red River Athletic Conference, fell to 1-3-1.
 
Prairie View A&M goalkeeper Dominique Dillon made five saves as she recorded her first shutout in nearly two years. Four of Dillon's saves came in the second half as she and the Prairie View A&M defense withstood a late St. Thomas rally.
 
The win helped the Lady Panthers avenge last season's loss at St. Thomas. The Celts triumphed 1-0 over Prairie View A&M in their first varsity match.
 
Prairie View A&M is the second Southwestern Athletic Conference team St. Thomas has faced this season. The second-year program opened the 2015 season with a 1-0 loss at Texas Southern.
 
The Lady Panthers return to action Sunday when they host Sam Houston State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lady Panthers Field.
