Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced Attack Lifts Men's Basketball Over the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs

All five starters scored in double figures for Prairie View A&M men's basketball team, led by Daquan Cook with 17 points and Zachary Hamilton with 14, as the Panthers beat Jarvis Christian an 84-69 Tuesday night at the William J. Nicks Building.

"Daquan is a season veteran coming in from UNLV," PVAMU head coach Byron Smith said.  "We didn't recruit him just because of his talents. We knew what type of player he was going to be when we brought him in, so this type of play doesn't surprise us about him at all. He's a total team kid, he gives his all in practice and he's just an overall good kid."

In addition to Cook and Hamilton, Prairie View A&M (2-3) got double-digit scoring from L.J. Westbrook and J'Donta Blakley, who each had 11 points apiece, while Admassu Williams had 10.  Tevin Bellinger  and JD Wallace both added eight points.  Williams also grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double.

"I have challenged Admassu openly in front of the team and the administration," Smith said of his 6-8 player.  "He's got to play and be bigger.  He's a senior that played a lot for us last year.  People around the league think he's one of better post players that scores around the basket in our league.  He even got some preseason all-conference mentions.  He's got to go hard when he's coming off the bench and he has to perform."

PVAMU managed 50.9 percent from the field, including 28.6 percent (6-21) from long range.  The Panthers hit 20-for-29 at the free throw line for 69 percent.

Jarvis Christian (2-1) connected on 32.9 percent from the field, including 8-for-38 from outside the arc.  Prairie View blocked nine shots and held a 47-42 edge in rebounds.

Prairie View jumped out to an early lead before the Bulldogs would hit their first basket eight minutes into the first half (18-4).  PV forced some early Jarvis Christian turnovers to keep the Bulldogs off the board, but eventually JC cut the point deficit in half (39-27) going into halftime.

PV shot 53 percent in the first half, including just 1-for-8 from long distance.

Jarvis Christian began to get hot in the second half, but it was PVAMU's tenacious defense that kept them ahead.  The Bulldogs cut the lead to eight points, but that would be the closet that they would get before the Panthers would take the 84-69 win.

"We knew that Jarvis Christian was going to be a tough team to beat. They played hard tonight and put forth their best effort, but I challenged my guys and they answered," Smith said.  "These games are always tough games and we just have to be ready to play."

Praiaire View A&M will return to the Baby Dome (William J. Nicks) on Friday for a 4 pm game vs Lamar.
