Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Panthers Roll Past Champion Christian

The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team won its exhibition game Monday with a 101-40 win over Champion Christian in the William J. Nicks Building.

Daquan Cook led three Panthers in double figures with 18 points of seven-of-nine shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. as Prairie View A&M shot 68 percent from the field (20-30).

Defensively, PVAMU limited Champion Christian to 36.4 percent shooting, forcing 27 turnovers.

"Champion is a growing program, and not as good as they want to be right now, so I'm tempering my enthusiasm of what I saw tonight," said head coach Byron Smith. "I did see a willingness to want to defend, and get out and play the passing lanes. We have some athletic guys, some long guys that can jam the basketball, that pressure the basketball, and get out and play, and let our defense dictate our offense."

Prairie View A&M never trailed in the contest, as a three-pointer by Cook less than a minute into the contest sparked an opening 21-5 spurt to start the game.  The Panthers shot nearly 70 percent from the field in the first half, making five of 10 three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to take a 54-22 halftime lead.

Cook started the second half the way he opened the game, as his three in the first minute sparked a 12-0 run that pushed the lead above 40 points. L.J. Westbrook had 14 points and Jacoby Green 11 off the bench for the Panthers, as every player scored at least two points for PVAMU, which had 20 assists on 43 made shots.

"Daquan did a really good job offensively," Smith said. "He was a spark plug for us. Zach Hamilton (nine points) shot the ball really well for us (4-of-5). I believe our offense will grow, but I'm a defensive guy…I really want to establish our defense and rebounding as we get ready to go into a really tough four game stretch."

The Panthers open the 2016-17 season at Oregon State Friday, at Fresno State next Monday, at St. Mary's on Nov. 16 and at Texas-San Antonio on Nov. 19.
