Panthers fall to No. 4 Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Panthers gave Texas A&M a bit of scare Wednesday before the Aggies plated seven runs in the fifth inning en route to an 11-0 win.

Texas A&M (5-0) led 2-0 after four innings and escaped a couple of Prairie View A&M rallies before pulling away from its visitors with the big fifth inning. Starting pitcher Stephen Kolek pitched four innings and gave up four hits for the Aggies, while Kaylor Chafin picked up the win with one inning of relief.

Edward Robledo pitched four and two-thirds innings for the Panthers (2-2), giving up six earned runs as his record dropped to 1-1. Edgar Sanchez and Carson Lee knocked doubles for Prairie View A&M, while Cody Den Beste and Joseph Mack each hit singles off the Aggies.

Phillip Gay gave up two runs during two and two-thirds innings for the Panthers, while Gabriel Rodriguez pitched an inning of scoreless relief for Prairie View A&M. PVAMU freshman catcher Thi Mai threw out a runner attempting to steal second base in the fourth inning.

With two outs in the top of the second inning in what was still a scoreless game, Mai reached base on fielding error to extend the frame. Mack followed with a single before Kevin Macias drew a walk from Kolek on a 3-2 count to load the bases. Kolek would strike out the next batter to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Ronnie Gideon's double to left field that scored Michael Barash gave Texas A&M a 1-0 lead. The Panthers again threatened to score in the top of the fourth when Lee knocked a double to center field, but he was stranded at third as the Aggies retired the next three batters.

The Aggies broke the game wide open in the fifth as the first five batters reached base before the visitors could get an out. Gideon came up with the bases loaded and knocked a 3-RBI double to stretch the Aggie lead to 4-0. Texas A&M scored thrice more in the inning.

The 11 runs Prairie View A&M yielded to the Aggies represented a drop in offensive productivity of nearly 50 percent for Texas A&M. The day prior to the Panthers' visit, the Aggies crushed Southland Conference opponent Stephen F. Austin by a score of 21-1.

The Panthers return to action this weekend when they travel to Edinburg to compete in the Al Ogletree Classic hosted by Texas–Rio Grande Valley. Prairie View A&M faces the host Vaqueros on Friday and Sunday, with a game against Washington State scheduled for Saturday.
