Three-run ninth lifts Texas–Rio Grande Valley to 7-6 over Prairie View A&M

EDINBURG, Texas – Texas–Rio Grande Valley rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth Friday to lift the Vaqueros to a 7-6 win over Prairie View A&M.

At UTRGV's Al Ogletree Classic, the Vaqueros trailed 6-4 when they loaded the bases with one out. Relief pitcher Darrien Williams induced Cole Loncar to fly out before Jacob Huckabay drew a bases loaded loss. Scott Mercer then knocked a single to bring home Joseph Collazo and Jose Garcia with the tying and winning runs.

Parker Gallegos ended up with the win for the Vaqueros (2-4). Charles Philpott started for the Panthers and pitched five and one-thirds innings, striking out three batters while walking seven. Two of the runs charged to Philpott were unearned.

Nick Gurka led the Panther bats with a 3-for-5 day at the plate and collecting two RBIs. Brashad Jones went for 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and sacrifice bunt.

Cody Den Beste (pictured) made a rare pinch-hit appearance and came through with a two-out, bases loaded single in the top of the seventh inning that scored Gurka and Jones and gave the Panthers a 6-4 lead. Kevin Macias started the rally with a one-out double – PVAMU's only extra-base hit of the game – and then later came home on Gurka's RBI infield single.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the third inning with two runs to tie the game at 2-2. Jaron Hicks scored on a passed ball and Macias moved to third base, and then came home on Gurka's other RBI single.

The Panthers return to action Saturday in Edinburg when they face the Washington State Cougars of the Pac-12 Conference. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
