Softball Returns To The Field With Series Sweep Over Langston

Prairie View A&M upped its winning streak to three games with a doubleheader sweep over Langston on Tuesday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Complex.

Freshman Daneisha Hinton hit a two-run homer and totaled three RBIs while fellow freshman Ashley Higgins threw a shutout as PVAMU won 9-0 in the opener.

Hinton broke open a scoreless game in the third with a shot over the center field wall which also scored freshman Shelby Williams. Once the ice was broken, PVAMU never looked back with a four-run seventh as senior Peyton Simms drove in the third run of the game while freshman Laurisa Hernandez scored on a passed ball for a 4-0 lead. A dropped fly ball paved the way for the fifth run as Amanda Ford scored while Briana Knowles smacked 3-1 pitch to the right side for a 6-0 advantage. Hinton's single in the fourth upped the margin to 7-0 as PVAMU triggered the run-rule following the single as a LU throwing error brought home two more runs.

Hinton finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored while Higgins threw a three-hitter.

Laurisa Hernandez's two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth capped off a comeback victory as PVAMU battled back for a 5-3 win.

Langston jumped ahead 1-0 in the second but PVAMU answered in the bottom of the second as Regan McIlvenna singled home Kelsey Coronado. The Lady Lions answered and regained a 2-1 lead in the fourth but PVAMU battled back in the bottom half as Alexandra Losoya singled home McIlvenna for a 2-2 tie.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the fifth as LU moved back on top 3-2 but PVAMU refused to back down as McIlvenna scored on Laurisa Hernandez's RBI two-RBI double for a 4-3 lead. Regan Richard added an insurance run in the sixth as her single up the middle scored Knowles.

Richard, McIlvenna and Coronado both finished with two hits with Coronado and McIlvenna scoring twice. Monica Cartwright picked up her second win in relief as she struck out two in 3.2 innings of work.

The Lady Panthers will return to the diamond on Wednesday as they'll host Incarnate Word at 1 p.m.
