PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Golden Lions of Arkansas–Pine Bluff completed a weekend sweep of Prairie View A&M as they defeated the Panthers 21-1 Sunday.
Julian Jones' first-inning grand slam capped a run of six consecutive UAPB batters to reach base before PVAMU recorded and out, and set the tone for the Golden Lions (4-14), who improved to 4-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The Panthers (6-12) fell to 3-5 in SWAC play, and will look to rebound this coming weekend at Grambling State. PVAMU visits Sam Houston State on Tuesday for a non-conference tuneup.
Humberto Medina pitched five shutout innings to get the win for the Golden Lions.
Darrien Williams (2-3) lost his first conference starting assignment, giving up 12 runs over one and two-thirds innings. Four of the five runs he gave up in the second inning were unearned.
Gabriel Rodriguez pitched two and one-thirds innings of relief for the Panthers, giving up only two earned runs of the seven UAPB scored in the bottom of the fourth.
Josh Wells drove in Prairie View A&M's only run with a pinch-hit groundout in the sixth inning to score
Brashad Jones. Jones knocked two hits in the game.
Joseph Mack also had a hit for the Panthers.
The Panthers face Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. in Huntsville.
