BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M Panthers rallied late Friday but fell short in a 4-1 loss at Southern.
Â
Southern's Daniel Franklin threw eight shutout innings while allowing only two hits and striking out nine batters to help the Jaguars (9-21) pull into a fourth-place tie with Prairie View A&M with identical 4-11 records in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division.
Â
Edgar Sanchez made his appearance in nearly three weeks for the Panthers, tossing eight strong innings and giving up only two earned runs in a losing effort. Sanchez threw 143 pitches and struck out five batters while lowering his ERA to 4.97.
Â
Angel Avalos scored the only run for PVAMU (9-20) on Friday; he reached base on an error to lead off the ninth inning, and then scored when the next batter,
Shannon Washington, knocked an RBI double to left field.
Â
The Jaguars, however, got a bit of a break, as they were able to retire Washington as he tried to stretch his hit to a triple. Two batters later,
Darrien Williams hit a two-out triple, but was stranded there as the reliever Troy Lewis got out of the inning without ceding another run.
Â
Dondrayas Harris and Jose DeLa Torre knocked two base hits apiece for the Jaguars. Harris also had an RBI for the home team, as did Anthony Valdes and Franky Montesino.
Â
The Jaguars and Panthers resume their series Saturday at Lee-Hines Field in Baton Rouge. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
