BOX SCORE 2 PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Prairie View A&M split a road doubleheader in contrasting fashions on Saturday afternoon versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Lady Panthers rallied back from a 5-1 deficit as they exploded for 17 runs in a two-inning span as they won the opener 18-5.
The Lady Panthers scored first in the opening frame as Shelby Williams drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before scoring on Kylar Ward-Flowers' two-out RBI single. UAPB would answer with a run in the bottom frame and added runs in the second, third and fourth innings to jump ahead 5-1 entering the fifth.
Williams opened the fifth with a leadoff single, stole second and scored on Laurisa Hernandez's RBI single. Ward-Flowers singled once again and Daneisha Hinton's two-RBI single drew the score to within 5-4. Amanda Ford would log a hit followed by Taylor Harvill's RBI double to knot the contest at 5-5. The Lady Panthers took the lead for the first time since the opening inning as Jalla Johnson's two-RBI single moved PVAMU ahead 7-5.
The Lady Panthers blew the game open in the sixth inning with an 11-run frame highlighted by Kelsey Coronado's three-run homer. The team amassed eight hits in the inning as the contest was called due to the run-rule after a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
Ford, Hinton and Hernandez finished with three hits apiece with Hernandez driving in four RBIs. Shelby Williams and Ward-Flowers scored three times apiece while Monica Cartwright won her sixth contest in a complete game effort.
After an offensive explosion in game one, game two was the complete opposite as UAPB scored twice in the sixth to overcome a one-run deficit for a 3-2 win.
PVAMU jumped ahead 1-0 in the first after Williams scored on a UAPB error. The lead grew to 2-0 as Williams singled and scored on Hernandez's groundout in the third. UAPB crossed home a run in the third to trail 2-1 and PVAMU's offense would stall as they logged only two hits over the final four innings.
UAPB jumped ahead 3-2 in the fifth after a two-run frame and held on as PVAMU had the tying run on second but failed to drive it in in the seventh.
Ashley Higgins struck out four in six innings of action while Williams scored both runs.
PVAMU is back in action on Tuesday as they'll face Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas at 3 p.m. They'll return home this Friday at 3 p.m. to face SWAC rival Texas Southern.
