BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M University women's basketball team lost at Southern 86-72 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams Monday night.
 
Alexus Parker scored 21 points, had nine rebounds and two steals to lead PVAMU (5-8 overall, 0-1 SWAC). 
Tori Carter scored 18 points and added four assists, and 
La'Sha Haynes tied career highs in both points (11) and rebounds (11) in recording her first career double-double. 
Dominique Newman provided a big scoring boost off the bench with 17 points and four rebounds.
 
There were two ties and six lead changes in the first 10 minutes, as neither team led by more than three points. Southern (3-6, 1-0), a 2016 SWAC regular season co-champion, scored late in the period to take a 19-17 lead after one.
 
The Lady Panthers were outscored 24-9 in the second quarter and trailed 43-26 at halftime.
 
Despite outscoring Southern 46-43 in the second half, including a 29-point fourth quarter, PVAMU could get no closer than 10 points over the final 20 minutes.
 
Prairie View A&M returns to action Wednesday at Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m., with a radio broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM.
