Tevin Bellinger's career-high 27 points led Prairie View A&M to a 72-52 win over Alabama State Monday night in William J. Nicks Babydome.
Bellinger's ninth-straight double-digit scoring game included six rebounds and five rebounds as the Panthers (8-15 overall, 5-4 SWAC) won their second straight game and fifth in the past six games.
Zachary Hamilton scored 16 points and six rebounds and two assists, and
Shay'rone Jett added 10 points, and
Ja'Donta Blakley scored six points, four rebounds, six assists, and four steals as the starters combined for 64 of the 72 points.
PVAMU led the entire first half, twice leading by as many as 10 points. Bellinger's 14 points staked the Panthers to a 32-27 halftime lead.
After Alabama State (5-16, 3-6) took a two-point lead early in the second half, a 24-4 Panthers' run over a 10-minute period broke the game open. A pair of free throws by
Troy Thompson gave PVAMU a 44-34 lead with just over 16 minutes to play. Hamilton found the hot hand in during the run, scoring eight of the next 11 points to extend the lead to 57-38 with just over eight minutes to play.
The Panthers return to action Saturday at Texas Southern at 7:30 p.m.
