HOUSTON – The Prairie View A&M University men's basketball team lost at Texas Southern 74-61 Saturday at the Health and PE Arena.
Troy Thompson scored a team-high 21 points,
Tevin Bellinger added 15, and
Zachary Hamilton scored 12 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers (8-16, 5-5).
Thompson's three first-half three pointers in the games' first three minutes sparked Prairie View A&M to an early 11-4 lead. The Panthers continued to extend the lead, as a pair of Hamilton free throws gave PVAMU their largest of the game, 20-6 with 12:24 to play in the first half.
However, turnovers helped to eliminate the Panther lead as Texas Southern took the lead and led 34-29 at halftime.
Prairie View A&M trailed by as many as 13 in the second half before chipping away at the deficit. The Panthers trimmed the deficit to three points twice, the last time at 59-56 on a jumper by
Ja'Donta Blakley but could get no closer.
The Panthers return to action Saturday at Jackson State at 5:30 p.m.
