PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas. – In a notably aggressive game of play primarily in the midfield, the Prairie View A&M University soccer team prevailed over Alcorn State 4-1 on Sunday at the PVAMU Soccer Complex.
The win by the Lady Panthers (5-8-1 overall, 5-2-1 SWAC) not only clinched a winning record in conference play, but also extended the unbeaten streak to four (3-0-1), the longest since winning five straight matches late in the 2014 season.
Prairie View A&M soccer is now 5-1-1 in its last seven matches, with four wins coming by shutout, and have outscored opponents 18-6 during that time.
Sophomore Blair Lane scored at least one goal for the third straight game and now leads the team with five goals on the season.
Striking first for Prairie View A&M was redshirt sophomore Alex Fields, who knocked in her first goal of the season off sophomore Diane's Neff corner kick at the five minute mark of the first half.
Less than three minutes later, Neff knocked in her second goal of the season, with an assist by freshman Jojo Bernal for a 2-0 PVAMU lead.
The final goal in the first half was scored by Lane, who netted the ball over the goalie's head in the 40th minute to give the Lady Panthers a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Alcorn scored in at the 49th minute of the game early in the second half before the Lady Panthers put the game away for good.
Redshirt junior Reina Cruz solidified the win her first goal of the season in the 89th minute for the final margin.
The Lady Panthers will play their final road game of the regular season when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face Howard next Sunday at 6 p.m.
