Volleyball Wraps Up Homecoming Weekend with A Key SWAC Win

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -  Led by the efforts of Taylor Goudeau, the Prairie View A&M volleyball team posted a 3-1 Homecoming victory in a Southwestern Athletic Conference match up over Grambling State Sunday at the William J. Nicks Baby Dome.

Goudeau's 12 kills helped the Lady Panthers (5-17, 5-10 SWAC) take a four set win (21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18) over the Lady Tigers (13-19, 7-7), Larissa Martinez and Calli-Jordan Hensch had nine kills apiece in the win.  Christen Augustine led the defensive side of the ball with 20 digs, while Tatierra Johnson had 13.  Erica Jimenez dished out a career and season high of 40 assists.

"This was a good win for us tonight," said head volleyball coach Tacho Tyler.  "A great ending to a great homecoming.  I was really glad to see the team jell together and I think this was at the right time, especially heading into tournament play.  Our defense has been feisty all year, but to have that attack behind them tonight made this such a significant win. It was a must win for us, just to add to the win column a little bit going into the tournament."

A slow start in set one was the downfall for the Lady Panthers in their lone dropped set of the evening.  PVAMU fell down by four points midway thru the match, but were slowly able to crawl back to a two-point deficit (19-20), but back-to-back errors by the Lady Panthers helped GSU to seal the deal and close out the set.

Set two was pretty much going Grambling's way until the Lady Panthers rallied back to tie the score 15-15.  After a tie at 20-all, a Jordan Hensch kill set up Augustine to serve the last four points up to take the lead for good and the second set victory.

The third set opened with a back-and-fourth rally with the last of the set at 19-all.  PVAMU never looked backed as Augustine once again served up the last five points on the board to take a 2-1 match lead over GSU.

The fourth set was much as the same as three until the Lady Panthers took an 8-0 run (18-10), allowing the Tigers only eight points from that points, before PVAMU clinched the game win.

PVAMU will resume play tomorrow as they host Southern University for senior night.  The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. and can be seen on SWAC Digital Network.  Fans can also find updated live stats on pvpanthers.com.
