Prairie View, Texas - The Prairie View A&M University men's basketball team defeated the Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions by a score of 73-55 at the William J. Nicks Building Monday night.
Zachary Hamilton and
Tevin Bellinger scored 23 points apiece to lead the Panthers in scoring. Â Ja' Donta Blakley was active in all facets of the game, adding six points, six rebounds, six assists, and six steals.
The Panthers and the Golden Lions traded the lead throughout the opening minutes of the first half, but PVAMU would go on a 9-0 run to take a 21-14 advantage with 10:47 remaining in the half after Bellinger converted a layup attempt. Prairie View would lead by as many as 10 points in the opening half, but were unable to put a considerable distance between themselves and the Golden Lions. As the first 20 minutes of action concluded, Hamilton buried a three-pointer to give the Panthers a 36-33 halftime lead.
The contest remained close in the beginning of the second half, as there were five lead changes and three ties in the first seven minutes. The Panthers took a 47-45 advantage with 11:20 left as
Shay'rone Jett converted a pair of free throws from the charity stripe. Â UAPB wouldn't get any closer as PVAMU put the game away. Â The Purple and Gold outscored the Golden Lions 26-10 in the final 11 minutes of the contest thanks to timely buckets by Bellinger, Hamilton, Blakley, and Jett.
The Panthers return to the hardwood Saturday in Huntsville, Alabama to take on Alabama A&M with a 6 p.m. tipoff and a live radio broadcast on 91.3 KPVU FM.
