Prairie View, Texas - The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers defeated the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Lady Golden Lions in a 62-57 win at the William J. Nicks Building Monday night.
Alexus Parker led all scorers with 23 points off the bench on 7-14 shooting from the field.Â
Tori Carter added 16 points on 7-13 shooting, while
La'Sha Haynes stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Lady Panthers broke slowly out of the gates falling behind 8-2, but would get going on the offensive end, going on a 13-2 run keyed by baskets by Parker,
Jeronia Allen, and
Dominique Newman. PVAMU was in possession of a 15-10 advantage as the first quarter concluded.
PVAMU did not relinquish the lead in the 2
nd quarter, as they led by as many as seven on a pair of occasions, but UAPB battled back. The Golden Lions cut the Prairie View lead to four, thanks to a three pointer from Niya Head as the first half neared its conclusion. Â After the first 20 minutes of action the Lady Panthers led 30-26.
The third quarter opened with the UAPB and PVAMU trading baskets. The Golden Lions would later reduce the Lady Panthers lead to just two points on three occasions in the 3
rd period, only for the Lady Panthers to come away with a timely basket to increase the lead. After three quarters of exciting action Prairie View A&M was clinging on to a 40-38 advantage.
The final 10 minutes of action proved to be just as scintillating as the first 30 minutes of the contest, as UAPB tied the game at 43 as Head drained a midrange jump shot. But the Lady Panthers would respond, as
Kayla Bell sunk a layup at the other end on the opposing possession.
Later in the quarter Parker would bury a three-pointer to give Prairie View a 52-46 lead with a little more than three- minutes remaining.  PVAMU was unable to pull away as, the Lady Golden Lions would cut the lead to one as Head knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 54-53. Parker and Bell would then combine to score the Lady Panthers next seven points to give Prairie View a 60-57 lead with, just 16 seconds left in the final quarter of play.  The Panthers forced UAPB to miss a potential game tying three-pointer, and Parker clinched the victory for the Lady Panthers as she sank a pair of free throws from the charity stripe.
The Lady Panthers look to win their third consecutive contest when they return to the hardwood to take on Alabama A&MÂ on February 25
th in Huntsville, Alabama with a live radio broadcast from KPVU 91.3 FM.
