NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Prairie View A&M University baseball team defeated Alcorn St. 4-3 Friday in a SWAC Tournament elimination game at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
The Panthers (20-36) advance to the SWAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2014 and will face defending SWAC Champion Alabama State tonight at 7:15 p.m. with a live radio broadcast on pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork. PVAMU must defeat Alabama State tonight and again on Saturday afternoon to advance to Sunday's 11 a.m. championship game.
Charles Philpott (5-2) earned the win on the mound, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, walking two, and striking out three.
Jordan Johnson had two big innings of hitless, scoreless relief before
Nic Campos ended the Alcorn State rally, getting the final two outs with runners on second and third to end the game.
Cody Den Beste went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. His first-inning double scored
Avery Williams, who walked to lead off the game to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
PVAMU added a run in the second inning as
Kevin Macias scored on a two-out error, and in the third as Den Beste scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, Den Beste led off with a double and scored on
Steven Williams' single to right field. Alcorn State scored three runs in the sixth as the Panthers' bullpen sealed the victory.
