The Prairie View A&M University football team met fans during Fan Day events before a 90-play scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Panther Stadium.
Â
"It was another good day," said PVAMU head coach
Willie Simmons said. "Both sides of the ball competed well. I was pleased with what I saw from our kickers. We made all but one field goal, with the only miss coming from 52 yards. The offense made some plays early on and then the defense picked it up as we moved forward. I thought it was a balanced scrimmage, so overall it was a good day."
Â
Now just over two weeks into camp and two weeks away until the season opener in Labor Day Classic XXXIII at Texas Southern, Simmons and his staff are attentive and careful of how to evaluate Saturday's scrimmage.
Â
"I think you have to be mindful to judge the execution," Simmons said. "We have good players on both sides of the ball. If everyone on offense is doing exactly what they are supposed to, but a guy on defense makes a great play, that's a plus for the defense but the offense did its job. It's the same on defense. If everyone is where they are supposed to be, but a guy makes a phenomenal individual play, you can't fault the defense for that. So you have to be careful when looking at the big plays when trying to look at who necessarily 'won' the scrimmage, but look at the overall execution of everyone on both sides of the ball."
Â
FAN DAY KICKS-OFF SATURDAY ON THE HILL: The afternoon started with Fan Day in the Athletics Administration Building, as hundreds of fans picked up schedule posters, got autographs and met their favorite Panther players.
Â
"It was a great day," Simmons said. "It was a great experience. We had a really good turnout for Fan Day. I was really excited the fans got to see the players up close and personal, and then had an opportunity to watch the scrimmage. The Marching Storm (PVAMU Band) was here, and that made for an electric gameday environment. Of course, they showed why they are the best band in the land and headed to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in November. Everything today gets us excited about September 2, as it gave us a true gameday feel."
Â
The Panthers will return to the practice Monday morning at Panther Stadium.
