GRAMBLING, La. – The Prairie View A&M women's and men's basketball teams are again on the road in a Saturday doubleheader at Grambling.
The women's game will tip at 3 p.m. and the men's game will begin at 5:30 p.m. The PVAMU Sports Network Broadcast will begin at 2:45 p.m. online at pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork. The games can also be viewed online at pvpanthers.com.
The Lady Panthers defeated defending SWAC champs Texas Southern last Saturday 61-56 and will enter Saturday's contest 2-1 in conference play.
Shala Dobbins lead the team in scoring with 32 points and
Chelsea Tieuel added 13.
Jhyrah Cobb led the Lady Panthers with 12 rebounds and added eight points in the win.
Dobbins remains the Lady Panthers leading scorer averaging 20.4 ppg., which places her ranked 29
th in the nation in ppg., and second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. She ranks first in the nation in both free throws made and free throws attempted. Both Dobbins (29
th) and
Dominique Newman (19
th) rank in the top 50 in steals in the nation. Dobbins has 41 on the season averaging 2.9 per contest and Newman has 40, averaging 3.0 per game.
The Lady Tigers of Grambling are tied for first place in the conference along with Jackson State and Southern with all the teams sporting a 3-1 conference record. Shakyla Hill leads GSU in scoring averaging 13.2 ppg. She is ranked 2
nd in the nation averaging 5.6 steals per contest and 3
rd in triple doubles.
In men's play, the Panthers (5-12, 2-1) will look to get back on the winning track after a 100-94 loss at Texas Southern last Saturday. Prairie View A&M nearly erased a 29-point deficit in the final 6 ½ minutes, cutting the trailing margin to five in the final minute.
The Panthers had a season-high five players in double figures, led by
Gary Blackston's second straight 24-point game along with six rebounds.
Zachary Hamilton had 18,
Austin Starr scored a career-high tying 14,
Keion Alexander scored a career-best 11, and
Dennis Jones scored 10 with six assists. PVAMU shot 47.9 percent from the field (34-71), made a season-high 13 three-pointers and committed a season-low six turnovers.
Hamilton (18.2 ppg) and Blackston (17.9 ppg) ranked third and fourth, respectively, in scoring.
Grambling (5-12, 1-3) is coming off a 72-61 road win at Alcorn St. The Tigers have posted non-conference wins at UT Rio Grande Valley (82-76), Georgia Tech (64-63), and Southeastern La. (68-67). Ivy Smith Jr. leads the team and is sixth in the SWAC in scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game. Alex Mpoyo is seventh in the league in rebounding (5.9 rpg).
