GRAMBLING, La. – With 17 lead changes and the scored tied 14 times, the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team just couldn't pull out the win in overtime in a 81-79 loss to Grambling State on Saturday.
"I feel like we didn't finish the game," said head PVAMU women's basketball coach
Ravon Justice. "We had an opportunity to finish up the game. We had a good shot and we just didn't finish. I think we played hard and there were sometimes that we think we missed some opportunities. I am proud of them for playing hard and not giving up."
Even with the loss, there were three Lady Panthers in double-digit figures.
Shala Dobbins was a point short from matching her season high 36 points. She had 35 points, shooting 21 of 27 from the free throw line. She also had nine rebounds, seven assists, and made five steals in the game.
Dominique Newman added 22 points, four rebounds, and six steals in the contest, while
Talisha Presley posted 10 points for the second time this season. She also pulled down three rebounds and a steal.
PVAMU outrebounded GSU 52-43.
In the last minutes of the regulation, the Lady Panthers held a three point lead with 2:06 left on the clock. With 31 seconds left in regulation, Grambling State hit a three to tie the game at 72-all. PVAMU used a time out to advance the ball, but ran out of time to make a last second play.
GSU opened overtime hitting two free throws before Presley hit one of two free throws to make it a one point game (74-73). The Lady Tigers went on a 4-0 run to a 78-73 advantage. Down by five Presley hit a three pointer to put the Lady Panthers within two (78-76). PVAMU continued to fight with 1:26 left on the clock.
Another Grambling three advanced them to take their five point lead back (81-76). A Lady Panther three by Newman got PVAMU within two. With ticks off the clock Prairie View attempted a final three, but it wasn't enough as the game closed out.
The Lady Panthers will return to action on Monday, when they face Jackson State for a 5:30 tip.
