PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M women's and men's basketball teams will host Southern in a Wednesday night doubleheader in the William J. Nicks Building.

The women's game will tip at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game around 7:45 p.m. following the completion of the women's game. As a part of the Holiday Hoops pricing special, tickets are only $5 and kids 18 and under are admitted free for Wednesday's doubleheader vs. Southern. The Lady Panthers will look to bounce back after falling in a hard-fought 73-72 contest to Alcorn Monday night. Â

Shala Dobbins remains the leading scorer for the Lady Panthers averaging 20.3 ppg. She is 30th in the nation in scoring and second in made free throws, averaging 80 percent. In the contest against Alcorn, she scored 23 points, while La'Neique Nealey posted a PVAMU career high of 15 points and seven rebounds. Mariah Campbell chipped in a career high of 12 points and five assists.

Southern will be entering Wednesday's contest after a 67-57 conference win over the reigning SWAC Champ Texas Southern. Briana Green led the Jaguars with 20 points and seven rebounds. Samantha Duncan added 17 points. Green leads the team averaging 14.7 ppg. Sarai Bissett is the second leading scorer averaging 9.5 points per contest. Green is also leading the team in rebounding averaging 6.2 rpg.

The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team opened Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a 76-64 win over Alcorn Monday The Panthers (4-11, 1-0 SWAC) opened SWAC play with a win for the first time since 2011 and are seeking their first 2-0 start in conference play since starting 3-0 in 2010.

Dennis Jones had his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. Gary Blackston added 13 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Zachary Hamilton and Austin Starr each scored 12 for the Panthers, which shot 51.8 percent from the field (29-56) and out-rebounded Alcorn 39-30.

The Panthers are 2-1 against Southern in the Byron Smith era, including a 70-64 home win last season on March 2 in which helped PVAMU to a four-way tie for third place with Southern, Grambling and Jackson State finished with identical 10-8 records.

Southern (4-10, 0-1) lost at Texas Southern 78-66 Monday night. Jared Sam scored 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Jaguars. Sam ranks sixth in scoring (15.3), second in rebounding (7.9), 10th in free throw percentage (76.6%), and fourth in minutes played (32.4). Sidney Umude (14 points, 5 rebounds) and Eddie Reese (11 points) came off the bench to score in double digits. The Jaguars are under first-year head coach Morris Scott, who had been an assistant coach for six years under current SU AD Roman Banks.
