MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team fell to Alabama State 70-68 in SWAC action Saturday afternoon at the Dunn Acadome.
Shala Dobbins led PVAMU in the scoring, with 22 points on 37.5 percent shooting from the floor.
Chelsea Tieuel notched 12 points on 50 percent shooting off the bench for the Lady Panthers.
The Lady Panthers had a slow start to the contest, shooting less than 35 percent from the field to begin the contest. This allowed the Lady Hornets to take a double digit lead during the opening quarter.
Mariah Campbell would convert a layup attempt with 1:30 seconds left in the quarter to cut the ASU's advantage to six. As the first quarter came to a close, Alabama State was in possession of a 14-8 lead.
Prairie View continued to struggle shooting as the second quarter began, which the Lady Hornets took advantage of stretching their lead to 22-13 with 6:49 remaining in the first half. The Lady Panthers would respond going on a quick 6-0 run that was capped off by a
La'Neique Nealey layup which cut the Lady Hornet's lead to two with 5:20 left in the second quarter.
However, Alabama State would go on a scoring run of their own in the following minutes stretching the lead back out to 11 points with a little more than two minutes remaining. As halftime was set to begin ASU led 36-28.
PVAMU would open the third quarter by scoring the first five points thanks to key free throws from Nealey and a nailed jumper from Dobbins. The quick scoring spurt left the Lady Hornets clinging to a 36-33 lead with 8:34 left in the frame. However, ASU would respond yet again outscoring PVAMU 7-2 in the following minutes to take a 42-35 lead with 5:57 remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Panthers erupted to finish out the frame, going on an 18-4 run and taking their first lead of the contest in the process. The run was keyed by pivotal baskets by Dobbins,
Talisha Presley and
Dominique Newman. As the buzzer sounded at the conclusion of the third stanza, PVAMU held a 53-46 advantage.
The teams would trade baskets during the opening minutes of the final quarter. A pair of converted free throws from Alabama State tied the contest at 57 apiece with 5:50 remaining.
Jhyrah Cobb would give Prairie View the lead with 3:39 remaining. The lead continued to volley back and forth between both squads as the game came down to its final minutes. With 1:42 remaining the Lady Panthers narrowly trailed 64-62. ASU would later take a two possession advantage with less than 30 seconds left, but the Lady Panthers continued to battle cutting the lead to one with just four seconds remaining on a Dobbins lay in. However, PVAMU ran out of time falling 70-68 as a desperation three point heave from Dobbins did not find the bottom of the net.
The Lady Panthers return to action on Monday, January 29th to take on Alabama A&M in SWAC action with a 5:30 tip off in Huntsville, Ala.
