Indoor Track and Field has Strong Showing in the Opening of the Season at the Wildcat Invitational

MAHATTAN, Kan. –  The Prairie View A&M women's and men's indoor track and field opened their season with top results at the Kansas State Wildcat Invitational Saturday.
 
The meet was used to see what each athlete will need to improve on for the upcoming Texas A&M meet next Saturday.
 
"This was just a warm up for the kids," said head men's PVAMU track and field coach Christopher Clay.  "I am pleased with the results, but this was just to see where they stand and what preparations we need to make for the upcoming meet at Texas A&M."
 
Both teams held second place finishes behind host team Kansas State.
 
On the women's side opening up for the Lady Panthers was sophomore Jakerria Hughes, who paced a career best time of 7.67 in the 60m run.  Teammates junior Lakeydra Mosley (8.00), freshman Kaizha Roberts (8.04), sophomore JayRielle Joseph (8.10) and sophomore Folami Williams (8.15) all placed sixth-ninth in the same event.
 
In their debuts as Lady Panthers sophomore's Mia Robinson placed second in the 200 (25.89), while her teammate freshman Alicia Carter finished with a time of 26.09 and a third place finish.  Seniors Ta'Kara Coleman ran the 300 meters finishing second with a time of 41.36, while senior Deonca Bookman placed behind her with a time of 42.10 and a third place finish.  Carter also placed fourth for the Lady Panthers with a time of 43.4 in the 300m.
 
Robinson ended her day with a first place finish in the 400 meters (1:00.21), and sophomore Sydnee Mitchell-Jeminson (1:00.35) finished second overall in the same event. Junior Alana Williams paced to third place in the 600 yards with a time of 1:28.60, while her teammate senior Alysse Grogan finished in sixth with a time of 1:37.37.  Dinah Murphy competed in the 800 finishing with a time of 2:22.46 and a second place finish. 
 
In the 60m hurdles Bookman finished with a time of 9.28 and a fifth place finish, and freshman Ja'Sha Sloan, who competed in the same event finished in sixth with a time of 9.33.
 
In the women's field events junior Nekeisha Bailey placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.74 meters. Sophomore Brianna Robinson and Mosley both finished with a mark of 2.95 in the pole vault to place second and third.  Hughes finished her day placing third in long jump, jumping 5.61 meters, while freshman Katherine Jackson placed 4th jumping at a mark of 5.38 in her debut as a Lady Panther.  Five other freshman placed behind Jackson in the long jump.  Darryian Smith (5.19m), Kaizha Roberts (5.06m), Syntyche Laguerre (4.96m), Iesha Broussard (4.91m) and Jaida Payne (4.16m) rounded out the sixth-tenth places for PVAMU.  The Lady Panthers team of Coleman, Murphy, Robinson and Bookman ended the meet with the 4x400 placing third (4:03.97).
 
Opening up on the men's side was Samuel Omoera, who finished second in the 60 meters with a time of 6.82 capping a career best.  Two other Prairie View runners finished in the top ten of the same event in their debut as Panthers.  Freshman Ansar Richardson finished seventh, while freshman Marcus Hartfield finished behind him in eight, both with a time of 7.10.
 
In the 200m Richardson finished first with a time of 22.85, while Ty'Ron Baker finished in second with a time of 23.05.  Senior William Polley ran a career best time of 35.25 in the 300m, while sophomore Carl Jordan ran his career best also in the 300m with a seventh place finish at a time of 36.03.  Sydeny Holt-Washington also ran a career best of 37.17 in the same event.
 
Sophomore Terrell Moses finished first in the 400 meters with a time of 51.57.  In the men's 600y the Panthers had two athletes to finish third and fourth.  Senior Brandon Kirby finished with a career best time of 1:13.32, while his teammate senior Darwin Allen finished with a time of 1:14.37, which was a career best time for him as well.
 
Senior Aaron Austin finished his 1000m run with a career best time of 2:37.05 and a fourth place finish.  Junior Gabriel Price also paced a career best in the men's one mile run with a time of 4:39.52 and a sixth place finish.  Senior Logan Williams posted a first place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8:21.
 
In the field events freshman Henry Brown placed second in high jump with a mark of 1.90 meters, while his sophomore teammate Deante Crittenden placed fourth overall with a mark of 1.90 meters.  Sophomore's Tristen Ham, Sunne Rodriguez-Weems and freshman Cameron Carson placed first, second and third in pole vault.  Ham and Rodriguez-Weems had a mark of 4.45 meters to place 1st and 2nd, while Carson placed third pole vaulting 4.00 meters.
 
Sophomore Jovondi Williams placed fourth in the shot put (13.46m) and fifth in the weight throw with a throw of 13.62m.  To conclude the day the men's team of Kirby, Jordan, L. Williams and Polley finished the meet with the 4x400 placing 3rd (3:23.77).
 
The Panthers indoor teams will return to action on Friday, Jan. 12, when they compete in the Texas A&M Invitational at College Station.
