Soccer Scores Big Win At Alcorn

LORMAN, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M soccer team grabbed an important win today in Southwestern Athletic Conference play taking down the Lady Braves of Alcorn State 6-1 with an impressive defensive effort.

"Today was a very important three points for our team and I am very happy with the quality of the finish," said head PVAMU soccer coach Sonia Curvelo.  "This definitely helped players that needed to get goals today. It helped their confidence.  It was important that they got the results going into Sunday's game. When it came to Jojo (Bernal) that got two great goals today, and I know that she's a player that's been wanting to find the back of the net.  It was also a good game for Sonia (Fuentes) that got her first goal today, by putting in a header off a corner kick.  Over all I am just happy with today's performance."

The first half saw PVAMU take 14 shot to just four for the Lady Braves.  The Lady Panthers continued their second half performance by putting up 13 more shots and sealing the game with a season high six goals in the contest.

Alexis Mack tapped in her second goal of the season in less than five minutes of the game, with a shot in the left lower corner from senior Reina Cruz.  Bernal posted her second goal of the season at 14 minute mark, on a shot from the right side from Alessandra Rivera to take a 2-0 lead.

Blair Lane hit her fifth goal of the season on a free kick from about 20 yards outs in the lower left corner to give the Lady Panthers a 3-0 advantage.  Bernal kicked in her third goal on a long pass from Lane for the ball to go into the high left corner.

Senior Mila Bustos also posted her second goal of the season off a deflection that went over the goal keepers head.
The Lady Panthers defense shut down the Lady Braves until the second half, when they scored their only goal at the 53rd minute mark.

At the 71st minute Fuentes earned her first goal of the season from a corner kick by senior Marinah McGinnis.
PVAMU attempted a season high of 27 shots by several different PV players, while Alcorn was limited to just eight.

Freshman goalkeeper Quinn Josiah, who ranked fourth in the SWAC in saves heading into the match, racked up six saves in the match.

The Lady Panthers will return to action Sunday at Mississippi Valley State in a 1 p.m. match.
