PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team topped Jackson State 85-73 on Monday evening at the William J. Nicks Baby Dome.

Shala Dobbins led all scorers with 29 points on 72.7 percent shooting from the floor.
Dominique Newman finished with 13 points in 16 minutes of play, whileÂ
Jhyrah Cobb and
La'Neique Nealey each registered double-doubles with Cobb posting 12 points and 14 rebounds in the outing. Â Nealey tallied 11 points and snatched down 12 rebounds in 39 minutes of game action.

The Lady Panthers had an explosive start to the contest, scoring the game's first 11 points. The strong start was keyed by buckets from Dobbins, Nealey, Newman and
Talisha Presley. A Cobb layup gave the Lady Panthers a 17-3 advantage with 4:22 remaining in the opening frame of play. PVAMU stayed in control during the remainder of the first quarter. Â As the first 10 minutes of the game came to a close, Prairie View was in possession of a 26-12 lead.

The Purple and Gold continued their strong play during the opening minutes of the second quarter leading by as many as 19 with 7:52 remaining in the half. The Lady Panthers continued getting strong play on both ends from Cobb, Dobbins, Nealey, and Presley. With less than two minutes to go in the second quarter, PVAMU led comfortably 38-21. However, JSU went on a 8-0 run to close the half to cut the PV lead to single digits going into the half at 38-29.

Prairie View was outscored in the early minutes of the third quarter, which allowed JSU to cut the lead to 42-36 in favor of the Lady Panthers with 7:09 left to go in the period. PVAMU responded going on a 9-1 run to widen the lead back to double digits. The run was keyed by baskets from Newman and Presley. PVAMU would go on to lead by as many as 16 as the third quarter wound down. But Jackson stayed within striking distance going on a 12-3 run to close the quarter making the score 61-54 as time expired in the third.

The Lady Panthers played well to begin the final 10 minutes of regulation, taking a 65-56 advantage on a converted
Jordyn Penniman layup with 7:53 to go in the contest. The Lady Tigers cut the lead to six with 5:35 to go. The squads traded baskets in the following minutes, unfortunately PVAMU was unable to pull away, leading by no more than eight points in the subsequent minutes. The Lady Panthers led 77-69 following a pair of converted free throw attempts by Nealey with 2:24 left in the game. JSU was unable to cut the lead to
less than six as the clock wound down and Prairie View was victorious by a score of 85-73.

The Lady Panthers will return to the hardwood for action on Saturday, February 17 in Pine Bluff Arkansas to take on UAPB with tip off set for 5 p.m.
