NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Prairie View A&M baseball team lost to Illinois Chicago 10-7 Sunday on the final day of the Andre Dawson Classic at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
The Panthers scored in the first inning for the third straight game.
Xavier Jefferson led off the game being hit by a pitch.
Tyler Gordon and
Daniel Lingua then walked to load the bases. Calvin Rucker's sacrifice fly to right field scored Jefferson. Gordon, who advanced to third on the play, later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 PVAMU lead.
Trailing 8-2 after four, the Panthers rallied in the sixth. Pinch hitter Demarie Smith led off with a walk before
Steven Williams singled through the right side, advancing Smith to third. Jayln Baker doubled to left center, scoring Smith and advancing Williams to third. With one out, pinch hitter
Tracy Warren's two-run single through the right side scored Williams and Baker.
Corbin Jamison's triple to left center scored Warren to cut the Prairie View A&M deficit to 8-6.
After the Flames scored in the home half of the sixth to extend to a 10-6 lead, PVAMU got multiple runners on base in the final two innings, scoring in the ninth. With one out, Rucker singled through the right side, advancing Lingua, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to second. Pinch hitter Ezekiel Bear singled to left field, scoring Lingua. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, the Panthers lined out to third to end the game.
Lingua and Baker each had two hits for Prairie View A&M, which will open the home schedule Wednesday hosting Nicholls at 2 p.m. and Thursday in a 1 p.m. double-header vs. Huston-Tillotson at Tankersley Field.
