PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team won its sixth conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon as they defeated cross town rival Texas Southern 65-48 inside the William J. Nicks Building in front of a raucous home crowd.
Shala Dobbins led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 21 points.
La'Neique Nealey tallied 19 points on 87.5 percent shooting from the floor,
Jhyrah Cobb chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds in 20 minutes of action. PVAMU were active defensively, limiting the nation's leading scorer Joyce Kennerson to four points on 12.5 percent shooting from the field.
As the contest began, the teams traded baskets and the game was close during the early going. A converted layup by Cobb cut the TSU advantage to 10-7 with 5:29 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers would later take a 12-10 lead with a little over a minute to go in the opening quarter thanks to a nailed three pointer by
Talisha Presley. Texas Southern would close the opening quarter by outscoring PVAMU 4-0 to take a slim 14-12 lead.
The second quarter was quite a defensive struggle as neither teams were able to pull away and lead by more than six during the opening minutes of the second frame. A Cobb lay in put the Lady Panthers within two points of the lead with 5:39 left on the clock in the first half. Texas Southern would later take a two-point possession lead, but the Lady Panthers eventually took a one point lead on an
Alexis Robinson free throw. The Lady Tigers tied the game as the quarter came near its conclusion. At halftime the game was all knotted up at 26 apiece.
The Lady Panthers outscored Texas Southern 5-0 during the first minutes of the second half thanks to a nailed three pointer from
Dominique Newman and a Nealey layup. Texas Southern battled back to cut the Lady Panther lead to 35-33 with 6:06 remaining in the quarter. PVAMU would then blow the game open outscoring the visiting Lady Tigers 16-3 during the final half dozen minutes of the third quarter. Leading the charge for the Purple and Gold offensively was Dobbins, Cobb, Presley, Nealey and Newman. Closing the third quarter out PVAMU was in possession of a comfortable 53-36 advantage.
The Lady Panthers continued to play tough defense and were efficient offensively as Texas Southern was unable to cut the lead to less than 17 points as the game came to a close and the Lady Panthers wrapped up a victory over the cross town rivals Lady Tigers.
The Lady Panthers will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 10th as they host Grambling State inside the William J. Nicks Arena.
