PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M baseball team topped Southern University 7-6 at Tankersley Field on Sunday afternoon in the final three game series of SWAC action.
The first three innings were scoreless as both squads received strong performances from their starting pitchers. The Jaguars jumped on the board first in the third inning on one run on one hit to make the score 1-0. The Panthers responded scoring two runs on a pair of hits in their half of the third.
Ezekiel Bear singled to left field advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Steven Williams hit a two run homer giving PVAMU a 2-1 advantage.
The Jaguars responded scoring three runs in the fifth to take a two run lead (4-2), which held until the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth on five hits.
Tyler Gordon singled up the middle advancing to third on a wild pitch. A Jayln Baker sacrifice fly allowed Gordon to score.
Daniel Lingua singled up the middle advancing to third, after an
Ezekiel Bear double to right field.
Brashad Jones singled to left field and both Lingua and Bear scored giving the Panthers a 5-4 lead going into the final inning.
Southern scored two runs on a pair off of two hits in their half of the ninth inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Panthers responded again in their half of the frame, as
Avery Williams reached base on a fielding error advancing to second. Gordon grounded out on a sacrifice bunt advancing Williams to third. Two at bats later Baker singled to center field, bringing Williams across home plate. In the next at bat Lingua was hit by a pitch putting two runners in scoring position for PVAMU. The Jaguar pitcher threw a wild pitch that looked indecisive for Baker, but he took advantage of the play advancing to third and after a throwing error by the Jaguar catcher, as Baker scored the winning run for the Panthers.
The Panthers return to action on Monday when they face Baylor for a 6:30 first pitch in Waco, Texas.
