Tyler Laux had a dominant performance on the mound, and
Steven Williams homered for the second straight game as Prairie View A&M beat Grambling 12-2 in eight innings Saturday at cold, blustery Tankersley Field.
Â
Laux went the distance, allowing only five hits and two unearned runs, walking one and striking out three. He did not allow a run in the final six innings and sat down the final eight Grambling hitters he faced.
Â
Williams went 2-for-3 at the plate, and his eighth inning walkoff homer ended the game.
Â
Trailing 2-0, the Panthers (7-21, 4-10) scored four runs in the third to take the lead for good. With one out,
Kaylor Lewis and
Tyler Gordon each walked, and
Corbin Jamison was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two out,
Calvin Rucker singled to right field, scoring Lewis as Gordon scored on a fielding error, advancing both runners to tie the score at 2-2. Jamison then scored on a passed ball to take the lead for good, and Rucker scored on an error for a 4-2 PVAMU lead.
Â
The Panthers added two runs in the fourth. Williams led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Following a walk to
Brashad Jones, who later stole second base, both players advanced on a passed ball as Williams scored.
Xavier Jefferson walked, and, after Lewis reached on a fielders' choice grounder, Gordon's single to right scored Jefferson for a 6-2 lead.
Â
Prairie View A&M broke the game open in the sixth. With one out following a singled by Gordon, Jamison walked.
Tracy Warren then tripled down the right field line scoring both runners. Following a walk to Rucker,
Ezekiel Bear reached on an error, scoring Warren. Williams then singled to left field, scoring Rucker and Bear for an 11-2 lead.
