HOUSTON – In their final matches of the 2018 regular season, the Prairie View A&M women's tennis team fell to Houston in doubleheader action on Sunday by identical scores of 4–0 at the Winston Tennis Facility.
The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in game one doubles. They also clinched the dual in singles with wins over Stacey Lackey,
Neharika Rama and
Timara Maxwell.
Lackey fell to Houston's Tsveta Dimitrova 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 position, while Rama fell at the No. 2 spot to Sveva Mazzari, 6-0, 6-1 and the decision went to the Cougars when Laura Bernardos outlasted Maxwell 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. Play was unfinished at the No. 3, 4, and 5 positions.
Game two was almost similar to game one with the exception of the duo of Lackey and Maxwell taking a set in the doubles with a 4-3 over the team of Bernardos and Alison Mills.
The Cougars took the singles match in straight sets as Lackey fell to Rama fell to Dimitrova 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 position, while
Jimena Duran-Castellanos fell to Mills 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. Mazzari defeated Lackey 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 position.
The Lady Panthers will return to action as they prepare for the 2018 SWAC Tennis Championships, beginning Friday, April 13. The top two seeded teams receive an automatic bye, as PVAMU will play Saturday against the winner of Friday's matchup between No. 3 Southern/No. 5 Alcorn. The championship is set for Sunday, April 15 at 9 a.m. in New Orleans, La., at the Pepsi Tennis Center.
