PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M women's soccer team's offense came alive Sunday, producing a season high 10 shots and three goals en route to capturing a 3-2 victory for the club's second win of the season, in their final non-conference match up.
"I was very proud of the efforts of the ladies today," said PVAMU head soccer coach
Sonia Curvelo. "It was exciting and good to get this type of result at home. It's the last prior to conference play, so we are happy to end it with a win, especially with us going into SWAC play next week. I am very proud of all the players on the field today. We really saw the leadership that we have been looking for all season. I felt Alex (Mack) and Reina (Cruz), as well as all the other players, had a good game today."
The Lady Panthers saw six players record at least one shot, led by the efforts of juniors
Alexis Mack,
Alessandra Rivera and
Blair Lane with two apiece. Sophomore
Jojo Bernal also added two giving her a career high of eight shots.
Redshirt junior Gina Rojas scored first for the Lady Panthers, with her first goal of the season. The Cardinals had a 1-0 advantage for the first 13 minutes of play. Rojas smacked one right into the back right side of the net to tie the score at 1-1 at the 26th minute mark.
"I think being that we were a goal down, the ladies responded very well," Curvelo said. "I am very happy with the mentality, because it is very difficult to be able to come back and win a game when you are down a goal. Today we saw the growth and maturity in their game that we now have been seeing over the last four weeks."
The scored remained tied until Lane, who just entered the game minutes before, found the back of the net at the 38 min mark, off a feed from Fields, who earned her first assist of the season.
The Lady Panthers' defense made the 2-1 mark stand into intermission, before Lane and the rest of the offense struck again in the 70
th minute. A beautiful pass from Rojas off a corner kick that found Lane who tucked it inside the far post to give the Lady Panthers a 3-1 and her third goal of the season.
The Cardinals scored a final goal at the 83
rd minute, before PVAMU closed out the win.
The Lady Panthers will return to play on Friday, Sept. 21, when they host Howard at 7 pm. to begin Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
