Soccer Shuts Out Jackson State on Senior Day

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M soccer team sent out three seniors with a bang, shutting out Jackson State in a 1-0 victory over the Lady Tigers in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon at the PVAMU Soccer Complex.

Reina Cruz, Mila Bustos and Marinah McGinnis were the three seniors honored today.

"Although this wasn't't our last home game, we felt it was a good weekend to have senior and family day," said PVAMU head soccer coach Sonia Curvelo.  "It was so important that we got the points today and the players really needed this, because we have created so many different opportunities in both Friday and today's game.  At the end of the day we had to get the "W".  I think going into next week we have to be prepared as well, and this game will give us more confidence."

PVAMU got on the board in the first half when junior Alexis Mack shot a high kick that was over the goalkeeper's head and just short of the top of the cross bar.  Gina Zavala De Rojas assisted on the goal.

"Lexi (Alexis) is a competitor, she always wants to win, every game and every ball," Curvelo said.  "In training, it's great to see her on the field. She's a player that really influences players around her.  We have to feed off of her, especially the younger ladies.  She's really doing a great job leading by example and in how she plays offensively and defensively.  I knew she had the hunger, so we tried something a little different today and she capitalized on the position switch."

Freshman goalkeeper Quin Josiah made just one save and posted her second shutout of the season.

PV outshot JSU 17-6.  Mack lead the team with six shots and two on goal, while Diana Neff had three shots and two on goal.

Prairie View A&M will return to action when they host conference opponent Alabama State on Friday, October 5, at 7 p.m.
