PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M soccer team pushed its winning streak to six matches thanks to a 2-0 victory over Grambling State Sunday afternoon during a Southwestern Athletic Conference match at the PVAMU Soccer Complex.
With the win, Prairie View A&M (9-7, 8-1 SWAC) has assured itself the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 2019 SWAC Women's Soccer Tournament. The Panthers have outscored opponents by a combined 13-1 margin during its current stretch of play.
The Lady Panthers used an explosive first half to gain the upper hand on the Lady Tigers. Prairie View A&M opened the scoring at the 21st minute, as senior forward Diana Neff scored her eighth goal of the season with a strike from wide left. Sophomore forward Sonia Fuentes and sophomore midfielder Kalia Brown were credited with assists during the score, as Neff moved into a tie for second-most goals by a SWAC player this season.
With sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Josiah snuffing out any and all Grambling State attempts on net, the Lady Panthers sealed the deal when junior forward Jojo Bernal found the twine with a shot early in the 37th minute. The early pair of goals were all that the Lady Panthers needed, as Josiah and the defense held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way.
Josiah made seven saves in her fifth shutout win of the season. Prairie View A&M out-shot Grambling 10-9, even though the Tigers held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
