Uneven Play Costly for Women's Basketball at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team fell 82-48 against Texas Tech University on Tuesday in the United Supermarkets Arena.

After two early ties, a basket from senior Bernesha Peters gave the Panthers (2-8) their first lead of the game at 6-5. Texas Tech then took a one-point lead, but a jumper from senior Mariah Campbell put the Panthers back ahead with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter. Following a 4-0 Texas Tech spurt, a crafty layup from freshman Diana Rosenthal cut the deficit to one as Prairie View A&M went into the second quarter down 11-10.

"During the first quarter, I think we did a good job of going after their bigs and executing our game plan," PVAMU head women's basketball coach Sandy Pugh said. "We just didn't do a good job with on-ball defense. I challenged the kids to come out and play with some fire in the second half, and they did that."

Aided by free throws, Texas Tech started the second quarter on an 11-0 run before a layup from Peters cut the Lady Raiders' lead to 10 at 22-12. Texas Tech responded with a 6-0 run after which a quick bucket from Prairie View A&M freshman Kennedy Paul brought the score to 28-14, but the Panthers struggled to slow the Texas Tech offense as the quarter progressed and ultimately went into halftime down 41-16.

Freshman Kennedi Heard led Prairie View A&M on a 9-2 run at the start of the third quarter as the Panthers cut the deficit to 47-25 with 5:11 remaining in the period. Despite struggling on the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers found some offense from long range, using the three ball to close the gap a bit down the stretch of the third.

"The third quarter was huge for us," Pugh said. "We just missed too many layups and open looks."

However, the Panthers weren't able to sustain their offensive spark in the fourth quarter aside from a Paul jumper with 7:13 left, they were unable to get into rhythm until late in the quarter. In the final three minutes of play, the Panthers outscored Texas Tech 10-3, but the gap was too large to overcome.

Peters was the only Lady Panther in double digits, netting 17 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Rosenthal followed with nine points, six rebounds and one steal. Heard and Paul posted six points each.

Pugh said even with the tough loss, she was proud of the team's resilience.

"They didn't stop and they didn't quit," she said. "They kept fighting. These are things that we can build on. We're going to grow. This program is still in its infancy stage, and we have a lot of freshmen. But I'm liking what I'm seeing, and we're going to continue to grow as a unit. "

The team will cap off their three-game road trip with a matchup against the University of Wisconsin on Friday, Dec. 20. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. in Madison, Wisc.
