Women's Basketball Snaps Jackson State's Five Game Win Streak

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team completed a season sweep, while snapping a five game win streak in the 89-80 win over Jackson State Saturday evening.

The team took their first lead of the game at 15-14 off of a made jumper from junior guard Dominique Newman with 4:11 remaining in the period, but went into the second quarter trailing 23-20.

PVAMU went on a 6-0 run led by redshirt senior guard Erin Willis, giving the Lady Panthers their second lead of the game at 29-28 with 4:07 remaining in the half. After trailing by two, a made three pointer by senior guard Sierra Shepard restored the team's lead to 32-31. A personal 4-0 run by sophomore forward Jhyrah Cobb pushed PV ahead 36-34.

Back-to-back layups from Senior Artavia Ford and senior guard Jordyn Penniman gave the team a 40-38 lead, before a last second basket from JSU tying the game at 40, going into the half. Senior Shala Dobbins led the Lady Panthers with 11 points.

A made three point shot from Newman got PVAMU going in the third quarter as they trailed 46-43. A 5-0 run led by Penniman cut the team's deficit to 52-50 with 3:34 left in the quarter. A layup by Cobb, put the Lady Panthers within arms reach at 55-54.  PVAMU went into the fourth quarter trailing 58-55.

The Lady Panthers opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run led by junior forward Ke'Asia Williams that gave PVAMU their final lead and not looking back at 60-58 lead. Following another run led by Dobbins extended PV's lead 64-60 with 7:06 left to play. A 14-4 run had the team ahead 78-66 with just over two minutes left to go in the game.

After going 11-5 from the free strip line in the final two minutes of play, PVAMU eventually walked away with the 89-80 win over JSU.

Dobbins led the team with 22 points and four rebounds, while Newman followed behind with 16 points, and five rebounds. Willis, contributed 11 points, and five assists.

The Lady Panthers will complete their three-game road trip at Grambling State on Monday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m., in Grambling, La.
