VICTORIA, Texas - In the last two innings of the game Houston-Victoria scored six runs to take a 7-4 win over the Prairie View A&M Panthers in mid-week action on Wednesday.
The Jaguars put the first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Panthers turned around in their half of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
After a pitching change for Houston-Victoria Daylan Luza reached base on a walk, before Demarie Smith singled to shallow center advancing Luza to third. Smith advanced to second on a stolen base and Luza advanced home on a fielding error by the catcher. Sean Smith was walked to put two runners on bases. D. Smith advanced to third on a balk by the pitcher to be within reach of home plate, while S. Smith advanced to second. With the bases fully loaded after Horner was hit by a pitch. On another wild pitch each runner advanced, prior to Julian Jackson grounded out to the short for the third out.
The Panthers scored again in their half of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Caleb Gilder opened the frame being hit by pitch, Gilder also advanced to second on a stolen base. Mark Kirkland singled to shallow center scoring Gilder, before the next three outs to close the inning.
After a few defensive changes in the top of the seventh Kirkland doubled to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Tracy Warren also double to left scoring Kirkland. Luz flied out to center on a sac fly to advance Warren to take a 4-1 lead over the Jaguars.
With the game tied at four-all, in the bottom of the eighth, the Jaguars got the bats going again notching three more runs in their half of the ninth to break the game open and giving the Jaguars a 7-4 victory.
Cameron Cooper shouldered the lost after just one inning allowing two hits and three runs, and striking out one after facing just six batters.Â
The Panthers will return to action when they host Grambling State for a three game SWAC weekend series. All the action will begin on Friday, March 8 with a 3 p.m. start at Tankersley Field.
