PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M volleyball team looks to get on the winning side of things as it faces Houston Baptist in its home opener.
Start time is set for 6:30 p.m. in the William J. Nicks Baby Dome.
The Lady Panthers (0-3) are coming off a competitive outing in the 42nd Annual Bearkat Invitational, where they pushed host Sam Houston State to five sets before battling Oral Roberts and Louisiana Tech to four-set decisions. Senior outside hitter Jaylan Thomas leads the way with 32 kills (2.67 per set) on a .240 attack percentage.
"After a really competitive weekend at the Bearkat invitational, we're looking forward to our home opener and turning competitive play into wins," said head PVAMU volleyball coach TaCho Tyler."
Junior middle blocker Victoria Pearson has notched a team-best .270 hitting percentage to go with 23 kills. Senior right side hitter CeTara Carter leads Prairie View with 36 total points, averaging 2.42 kills and 1.0 block per set. Freshman setter Jakarta Hope has dished out 65 assists (5.42 per set), and senior Erica Jimenez has put up 34 assists.
Freshman libero Skyla Childs paces the Lady Panthers with 43 digs (3.58 per set).
Prairie View A&M last met Houston Baptist in the 2018 season opener, with a 3-1 result in favor of HBU. This will be the 20th meeting all-time between the teams.
Scouting the Competition:
- HBU comes into the match with a 2-1 record following the opening weekend of play, sweeping Bethune-Cookman and downing Radford in four sets before falling in straight sets to Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
- The Huskies are led by Mikayla Vivens, who is averaging 3.5 kills and 4.3 digs per set on the season and Kelly Colwell is averaging 2.6 kills and 3.6 digs per set. Morgan Dewyer paces the offense with 9.6 assists per set and Hannah Lewis anchors the defense with 4.9 digs per set.
- HBU was selected to finish fourth in the Southland Conference's preseason poll.
