THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The Prairie View A&M women's tennis team earned one match point in doubles play, but couldn't rally in singles play falling 6-1 against Sam Houston State Saturday at the Woodlands Country Club indoor courts.
After a rain delay the Lady Panthers garnered the early advantage, cruising in doubles play. Victoria Fuenmayor Castillo and teammate Mahogani Green defeated their opponent 7-5, and Claudia Medina and teammate Sanchez Villalobos handled their match to the tune of 6-4, securing the doubles point.
However, Prairie View A&M wasn't able to build on its strong start as singles play commenced. Castillo dropped her match in straight sets (1-6, 0-6), while Jimena Castellanos was unable to find her footing in a two-set stumble (0-6, 1-6).
Green managed a competitive effort in her match, albeit in a 6-2, 6-2 falter. Jessica Lackey was unable to halt Sam Houston's momentum in a two-set loss (2-6, 1-6), and Medina couldn't get much started, also suffering a straight-set defeat (1-6, 1-6).
Selma Sanchez Villalobos completed competition for the Lady Panthers dropping her contest in two sets (1-6, 2-6).
