PRAIRIE VIEW – Southwestern Athletic Conference play begins for Prairie View A&M women's basketball as the Panthers welcome Alcorn State and defending conference champion Southern to the Baby Dome this weekend.
Prairie View A&M (3-9) faces Alcorn at 3 p.m. on Jan. 4, and will take on the Jaguars on Jan. 6 at 5 p.m.
The Panthers took care of business last time out, taking down Huston-Tillotson 79-60 behind a fast start and in particular, a career effort from freshman
Diana Rosenthal. Rosenthal scored 27 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the game. The outing represented a single-game scoring high for any Panthers player this season.
Ke'Asia Williams posted 12 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists in the win as well.
Senior
Bernesha Peters has been the team's most consistent offensive performer, averaging 10.6 points per game to lead the Panthers. Rosenthal and
Kennedy Paul are both off to strong freshman campaigns as well.
Rosenthal is second on the team, averaging 8.8 points per game on a team-best 43.1 percent shooting clip, and Paul is close behind, averaging 8.4 points per game and a shade below four rebounds per game.
The Panthers have been a different team within the confines of the Baby Dome this season, especially on offense. Prairie View A&M has averaged nearly 71 points per game at home, where they have a 3-1 record on the season. Conversely, the Panthers have yet to score more than 55 points away from home this season.
Prairie View A&M has dominated Alcorn State in recent meetings, having won each of the past three meetings over the Lady Braves by at least 20 points. Things have been slightly tighter against the Jaguars as the Panthers are 4-2 against the defending league champions over the past six meetings. However, this includes a regular-season sweep last season in head coach
Sandy Pugh's debut season on the Hill – who was a former longtime coach for the Jaguars.
Scouting the Lady Braves:
- Alcorn State (4-8) leads the SWAC in scoring defense (66.3 points per game allowed) and opponent three-point field-goal percentage (28.3 percent).
- Jada Hargrove and LaRae Rascoe lead the charge, with each averaging close to 12 points per game and better than 2.5 steals per game.
Scouting the Jaguars:
- Southern (2-9) is in the midst of an eight-game skid following a 2-1 start to the season. The Jaguars have struggled offensively, averaging 54.2 points per game, fewest among league teams.
- Southern is tops among SWAC teams in opponent rebounds per game, an area that Prairie View A&M hopes to improve upon given that the Panthers corral the fewest boards per game among league teams. Additionally, the Jaguars commit the fewest turnovers per game among SWAC teams.
- Brittany Rose leads the Jaguars in scoring at 9.8 points per game.
