ITTA BENA, Miss. – Senior Gerard Andrus posted a double-double as the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team cruised past Mississippi Valley State 88-69 during Southwestern Athletic Conference action Monday evening at R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
The victory pushes the Panthers' (16-11, 12-2 SWAC) current win streak to six. Andrus scored 24 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, with 10 boards coming in the second half. Senior Devonte Patterson added 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds and senior Chancellor Ellis chipped in 14 points. Junior Dewayne Cox added 10 points off the bench, while sophomore Faite Williams was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and a team-high 10 assists.
For the second-straight game, it was a big second-half that did the trick for Prairie View A&M. Only ahead by a bucket at the break, the Panthers' offense came alive in the second period, outscoring the Delta Devils 55-38.
Up 33-31, Ellis found his range from beyond the arc, burying a trio of three-balls as the Panthers used a 13-2 run to go ahead by 13 with 15:52 remaining. The Delta Devils responded with a 9-4 spurt to pull within eight, but Prairie View A&M would not let MVSU get any closer. Andrus scored six of the Panthers' next eight points as PVAMU put together another 13-2 run that pushed the lead to 17 with 8:34 left.
The Panthers cruised without much resistance from that point, leading by as many as 24.
Prairie View A&M shot 50 percent from the floor and made 25 assists on 33 field goals. Prairie View A&M scored 26 points on 18 Delta Devil turnovers and held a 30-22 advantage for points in the paint. left.The Panthers held MVSU to 38.6 percent shooting from the floor.
Caleb Hunter led the Delta Devils with 16 points.
