Comeback effort falls short for Women's Hoops versus Alabama State

PRAIRIE VIEW — The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team (11-16, 8-7 SWAC) dropped a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup to Alabama State 61-52 Saturday evening at the Baby Dome.

Trailing after the first quarter, Prairie View A&M inched closer after freshman Diana Rosenthal made a free throw, and senior Mariah Campbell converted a lay-up to make it 19-13. However, Alabama State put together a 13-2 run to go ahead by 12, an advantage that held strong the rest of the half.

The Panthers began the third quarter on a 9-4 run led by senior Ke'Asia Williams, cutting the score to 37-30 with 6:05 left in the third. After a 6-2 Lady Hornets spurt, grad transfer Tatyana Perez led the team on an 11-4 run, putting the Panthers within four going to the final quarter.

Baskets from Rosenthal and Newman closed the gap to 47-46, but an 8-2 ASU run derailed the Panthers' comeback hopes. Though Williams scored four points to pull the Panthers within three, the Lady Hornets managed to seal it with free throws.

Williams nabbed a double-double, posting 12 rebounds, 10 points, two assists and one block. Newman followed with nine points and four rebounds. Cobb also contributed with nine blocks, seven points, seven rebounds and two assists.
