SAN MARCOS, Texas – A tough third inning was too much for the Prairie View A&M baseball team (4-15) to overcome during an 11-4 loss to Texas State Wednesday evening at Bobcat Ballpark.
Down 1-0 entering the third inning, Prairie View A&M's hurlers lost command of the strike zone, dealing four walks as the Bobcats capitalized with a five-run frame to effectively seize control of the game. The Bobcats added another in the bottom of the fifth before the Panthers showed some life.
In the top of the sixth, the Panthers managed three runs to move within striking distance as Brayden Johnson reached on a misplay that allowed Alex Martinez to score, and Xavier Jefferson followed with a RBI single to bring home Calvin Rucker. Johnson made it 7-3 Bobcats as he scored during an off-target throw that failed to get Jefferson during a steal attempt.
However, the Bobcats responded with three runs of their own – aided in part by a Panthers error – in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on another in the home half of the eighth. Martinez scored Christian Mendez on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth, but the Panthers were unable to muster any more offense from that point.
Jefferson was 1-of-2 with a pair of steals. The Panthers issued 11 walks in the game.
