BEAUMONT, Texas – A rough sixth inning from the Prairie View A&M baseball team was the culprit during a 12-1 setback at Lamar Wednesday evening.
After a scoreless first, the Panthers looked to get going following a lead-off double in the top of the second inning by
Calvin Rucker, but PVAMU's lineup was unable to bring him home. Lamar added a run in the second and third innings, and Prairie View A&M used small-ball in the top of the fifth frame to get on the board.
After
Christian Mendez drew a walk,
Brayden Johnson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mendez in scoring position. Following a wild pitch that led to Mendez taking third, a Zach Trevino sacrifice fly cut the deficit in half.
However, the Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning and the contest unraveled for Prairie View A&M in the sixth, as a pair of defensive miscues led to a six-run inning for Lamar, with four of the runs unearned.
Lamar added two more runs in the eighth inning as the Panthers' offense was unable to find opportunities against the Cardinals' pitching staff.
Kellen Rogers had a hit in the game for PVAMU, reaching base three times.
Matthew Sandoval was charged with the loss, striking out two in 6.0 innings.
